November 28, 2022 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

We are back again sharing the second part of The Harvard Classics in audiobook format. I will keep this post formatted in a similar manner to The Harvard Classics Audiobook Edition Part 1. This is a great list of classic literature compiled by the President of Harvard back in 1909 originally dubbed “The 5 Foot Shelf”.

Disclaimer: I have not personally listened to or read through all of these so please us this list of audiobooks at your own discretion.

The Harvard Classics Audiobook Edition Part 1

September 24, 2019 By Thaleia 5 Comments

Many of you dear readers are avid learners and researches but maybe you have NOT heard about the Harvard Classics- gasp! I came across this list a few years ago BEFORE my older two were in High School.

The Harvard Classics originally known as Dr. Eliot’s Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909. “Dr.Charles W.Eliot, the former Harvard president who edited the series, maintained that if one read just 15 minutes a day from the 51 volumes he assembled, it would constitute “a good substitute for a liberal education to anyone who would read them with devotion.”

I want to tackle this huge list of books but there’s no way this mama of 4 is going to lug huge books around for the next several years! Then I thought why not create an audio addition that can be uploaded to your phone or Kindle! (you can purchase a Kindle on Amazon here or grab the free Kindle App for pc, mac, phone or tablets!)

Homeschooling using Librivox

March 17, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

I’m not quite sure how long ago I found out about Librivox but I love free resources and audiobooks could be expensive if you had to buy them. I enjoy homeschooling using Librivox and using Librivox for personal growth. There’s two different ways that I use Librivox so I will share those with you first.

LibriVox website and App

Homeschooling using Librivox! Easier then you think! #audiobooks #education #freeapp #charlottemasoneducation #ENWC

1. Download audiobooks for old cellphone or iPod via the Librivox website. Yes, we still own old tech that doesn’t have WiFi or use apps and read more about this on our post –Digital Devices for Homeschool. Librivox online works very well with these types of devices. You go to Librivox via PC and find a couple classic Literature titles. Then you can download them chapter by chapter or zip file or via iTunes!

2. Use the free Librivox app or the paid ad-free version to listen to audiobooks on the go! No waiting for your turn like Overdrive. If you download the audiobooks to your device then you won’t use up your data when off WiFi.

Ways to Use Digital Devices for Homeschool

January 24, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Since this month’s theme is Organization I thought I would share some of the digital devices that we use in our homeschool which is one way we stay organized. First, I should probably share what types of digital resources we use and where we got them, and then proceed to share some free resources we use on each. If you are looking for free apps that we use for homeschool I wrote a post about that called-  Must Have Free Apps for Homeschooling.

We currently use audiobooks, ebooks, and videos in our homeschool. We use both free and borrowed resources as well as CD’s that we own like The Chronicles of Narnia that we earned from My Reader Rewards. (You can earn 50 pts. Per month just for sharing your link on social media!)

We use tablets, mp3 players, old cell phones and our van’s cd player to listen to audiobooks. Since we have many different devices we use what programs and apps they are compatible with. While the idea of having so many “devices” might make your head spin or drive you crazy, I love it! I can easily upload an app or download an ebook to use while “off wifi” so kids can stay on task more easily. The older the device the more limited apps and junk games it will have to offer.

Free Nature Study Resources

September 27, 2016 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

I love free resources and digital resources are even better! I have been collecting free homeschool resources for awhile and love using free nature study resources. I think that many parents overlook the incredible value that nature study has to offer. If you take your children out in nature not only are they learning about nature but science, art, community, preservation, and their place in the world! That’s a lot of concepts that you cannot learn from a book!
