Middle School Literature Curriculum with Memoria Press

March 31, 2016 By Thaleia 1 Comment

We recently were given the Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set for review from Memoria Press via TOS Review Crew. I chose this particular grade level so that both Eldest and Princess could both benefit from it. Eldest is in 7th grade and Princess is in 6th grade but this is both their first time using a Literature guide.

We received both the student guides and the teacher’s guide for four classic Literature novels. The Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set includes: Anne of Greene Gables, The Bronze Bow, The Hobbit, and The Trojan War. I felt that these selections would be both beneficial and interesting to both a Middle School boy and girl.

Princess chose Anne of Greene Gables to start and Eldest chose The Hobbit. Both Literature Guides are very thick with more than 50 pages. Each guide includes vocabulary, comprehension questions, quotations and discussion questions, enrichment activities as well as unit review and test sections. Each appendix offers things unique to each story. The Anne of Green Gables appendix includes simple definitions for the vocabulary words within the Glossary, sections of poems referenced from the book within the Supplemental Reading, scripture references are within the Biblical and Shakespearean References and a map of Canada. In the appendix of The Hobbit student study guide they also have the runic alphabet from the book and offer opportunities to translate sentences into English from the runic symbols.

The first thing that I did to prepare for this new homeschool curriculum was to be sure to have the books on hand. We already own Anne of Greene Gables in paperback and on Kindle but we didn’t have any of the other three books. I quickly searched a few of our local libraries to borrow a Kindle version of The Hobbit for Eldest. He prefers audio-books and ebooks to paperbacks so that is what we use most often with him.

We are really unschoolers who love books, music, and art but not too much into the heavy written work or narration that these Literature Guides suggest. I think that Memoria Press’s Literature Guide Sets would also benefit a student who wants to explore a teaching background or a student who would want to add extra Literature studies to their High School curriculum. A student who loves words, vocabulary, and delving in beyond the basic who, what, where, when would also benefit from these sets.

This looks like a great curriculum my son was just asking about Anne of green gables.
