DIY Outdoor Play Space Ideas

July 26, 2016 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Do you long for your children to love the great outdoors right in your own backyard? Have you thought about making a DIY outdoor play space for your children to enjoy? Check out these ideas for some inspiration and tutorials on creating just the right outdoor play space.

DIY Outdoor Play Space Ideas

I have had lots of ideas gathered from around the internet and have pinned tons of them on my Backyard Fun pinterest board but many have not been accomplished. Some require funds that we do not have or equipment that we do not own. Most of the ideas listed below are a little simpler and maybe a lot easier to accomplish. I plan on using these ideas as inspiration for my own children in our own backyard. I hop that you find something that gives you the inspiration to try one of these DIY outdoor play space ideas!

DIY Wood Sandbox from Kennary-This particular post was sponsored so the supplies were provided for the family but if your budget permits you could do something like this as well.

25 Fun Things to Do With Sidewalk Chalk from Two Kids and a Coupon- Who doesn’t own some sidewalk chalk? Super easy to find at any local store and super cheap at the end of Summer on clearance. We usually stock up and add to Easter Baskets and Christmas Stockings!

How To Make A Sweetpea TeePee from Saving Dollars and Sense- Another great idea to check out for next Summer but by buying the supplies at the end of Summer you can save a bundle!

DIY Water Wall from Little Bins for Little Hands- Do you love to recycle while allowing you children endless hours of play? This project allows just that. You may have to buy zip ties if you don’t already own them but you can usually find them cheap at the hardware store or the dollar store.

DIY Recycled Outdoor Music Station from And Next Comes L- Another great wya to recycle items to give your children a chance to make some noise. This one has been on my list for a few years. I really want to provide some interactive fun for my two boys.

A Real “Play” Garden from Teach Me Mommy- If you have the space and a few hours a couple days you should be able to accomplish this project without too many tools or supplies.

Jumbo Outdoor Magnet Board from Something 2 Offer- While the housing industry has not been so good and realtors have had to find work doing other things I saw it as an opportunity to upcycle an old realtor companies metal sign for play!

Simple Outdoor Mud Kitchen from Messy Little Monsters- Another create way to re-purpose or recycle some common household items. You may be able to find some of the supplies on clearance or freecycle or craiglist or your neighbor’s backyard for cheap or free!

Outdoor Balance Beam from Hands On as We Grow- One or two wooden landscaping timbers is all that you need for this fun project. If you find someone giving away shorter scrap pieces those could add and extra element of fun and some math skills as well.

Garden Fence Counting String from Adventures of Adam- Got any jump ropes with broken handles? We do! This project is great to use something that you already have and turn it into  a great outdoor math activity!

Making a Wooden Sandpit from Childhood 101- Another idea that could be upcycled or could break your budget all depends on how much time you have to plan. I still think it’s a great way to allow your child their own digging space.

Front Porch Nature Table– Giving your child a place right by the front or back door to display their nature items will give them a sense of importance. If you have a child who loves to collect things from nature walks but have someone that also has allergies then this could be a great solution!
