Books to Teach Children About Type 1 Diabetes #T1D @QuinnNystrom

August 3, 2018 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Talking about Type 1 Diabetes to an adult is hard enough nevertheless trying to explain Type 1 Diabetes to a child. Some of the best ways to teach children are through books so why not teach about type 1 diabetes by reading some books!

We were given two books after Eldest was first diagnosed with T1D. We call the one “the Pink Panther book” and the other was a Disney book. I am not sure what happened to the Disney book but the other has been stored in our filing cabinet with all of the Type 1 Diabetes resource materials sent home with us after being released from the PICU. The actual title is called “A First Book for Understanding Diabetes”.

Type 1 Diabetes: Teaching Siblings How to Check Blood Glucose Levels

February 8, 2018 By Thaleia 10 Comments

Teaching siblings how to check blood glucose levels is very important. I feel that every sibling should know how to care for their sibling with Type 1 Diabetes, even if they are in preschool. We are teaching our 4-year-old, Lil’ Red,  and our 7-year-old, Big Red, how to check their big brothers blood glucose levels using Eldest’s FreeStyle Lite meter.

We started with teaching Princess how to check Eldest’s blood sugar when he was first diagnosed so she would have been 10 years old. Next we taught Big Red how to use a blood glucose meter to check his big brother’s blood glucose levels. Now that Lil’ Red is 4 years old we think he’s old enough to learn how to check his big brother’s blood glucose levels.

Ways to Organize Special Medical Documents

January 17, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Going through a recent “battle” with insurance to get my son’s Dexcom Transmitter made me realize that I need a better way to organize special medical documents! You see we had a PA ( prior authorization) with a medical supply company that will no longer supply any Dexcom items for Eldest. The insurance said the medical supply company is supposed to honor the PA like a contract but they won’t.

Ways to Organize Special Medical Documents

I have been battling for almost two months to find a new medical supplier and now waiting for a PA from insurance. It’s been a tough two months for Eldest battling ketones and blood glucose levels higher and lower than normal. Riley has had some rough nights having to set extra alarms to check to be sure Eldest’s BG’s don’t suddenly plummet. If they are low for bedtime then carbs must be administered and another alarm set which means another finger prick-poo!

5 Things We Never Travel Without

September 25, 2017 By Thaleia 2 Comments

This post was sponsored by Nabisco as part of an Integrated Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Do you spend a lot of time in your vehicle? Maybe you head out on field trips frequently or have lots of therapy appointments for your children. Your family might just enjoy spending some time on the open road and you could use some sanity saving tips like these 5 Things We Never Travel Without. Maybe your family is like ours and needs snacks, tech, and comfortable clothes to make it through the day OR maybe your family is more relaxed and travel on the fly. Either way I am sure you can relate to needing somethings in your vehicle to make your travel go more smoothly.
