We Love Weekends

Back to School Tax-Free Weekend

July 7, 2017 By Thaleia

I know it’s just the beginning of July and you are groaning that I am bringing up Back to School, right? I know I hate the idea of the care free days of Summer coming to an end BUT I love school supplies AND saving money! Since 2016 Ohio joined the tax-free weekend band wagon so it’s time to get my list ready. I know some schools already have their Back to School supply lists already available for the “early shoppers”, lol.  I am guilty of snagging great deals as soon as they start rolling out in our local stores.

Planting a Garden With Children

July 24, 2015 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Nothing quite like the satisfying feeling of digging in the dirt and growing your own food. This makes planting a garden with children a really great idea!

Planting a garden with children
My youngest loves dirt! This morning I caught him playing in our garden supplies bag. He said, “Dig!” very clearly so I asked him if he wanted to help me plant the potatoes out front. He got excited and ran to the door. He helped with the trowel and kneeling pads and getting in the garden gloves out of the bag.

Once I removed all the bricks and pops off the large grey tarp we are ready to start digging. He was super excited the moment he saw the fresh dark cold dirt. I could not even distract him by pointing out the crickets and bugs that were crawling on the dirt!

Princess woke up and came out to help. She split the potatoes while I got the holes ready. Lil’ Red kept playing in the dirt until we started planting then he helped cover the plants.

I tried to get him to dig up some weeds but he was good squishing his toes in the dirt. I went on to pull more weeds then looked up to find he was eating dirt off the trowel! We did manage to plant 25 potato plants before 9:30 am! Quite the accomplishment.

What have you planted with your child? Do you offer them a place to dig?

Go Mulberry Picking

July 17, 2015 By Thaleia

I remember the fun and excitement of waiting for that perfect day when the Mulberry trees would turn purple. This meant that all the Mulberries were ripe for the picking. I grew up on 5 acres which had a handful of really nice trees that yielded a lot of berries. We often ate as much as we picked.

Backyard Camping Ideas and We Love Weekends

June 19, 2015 By Thaleia

My 5 year old has been begging to camp outdoors since a few weeks before his birthday in April. Since the weather was very cold then I promised him that once the weather got warmer we’d camp out. Well, now the weather has been in the mid 90’s during the day and only cooling down to mid 70’s at night-ACK! I am watching the weather like a hawk for a good night the little boys and I can camp out back.

Researching a New Pet and We Love Weekends

June 12, 2015 By Thaleia

Some of Princess’ friends have hamsters so she has been wanting one for probably a year now. The main objective in getting a hamster is keeping a clean room and learning to care for a small pet. We had a dog, Jazz, whom we had to put to sleep October 2013 and we have been pet free except for some caterpillar’s last Fall. I have to admit it has been really nice to not have to care for a pet or find a pet sitter if we are going to be gone for more then 3-4 hours.

Researching a New Pet

She has been diligently keeping her room at bay as well as reading and researching all about hamsters. Last Summer one of the college student’s who works at the library brought her hamster in for another librarian to hamster sit! This of course helped ignite the love of hamsters all over again. (My husband has actually owned two in his lifetime which is very interesting.)
